Lions Split With Builders In Virginia

NEWPORT NEWS, Virginia -- Penn State Brandywine and The Apprentice School split a non-conference baseball doubleheader on Saturday afternoon as the Lions claimed game two 7-1 after the Builders rallied for a 3-1 triumph during the opener.

Carmen Scota (Broomall, Pa./Marple Newtown) tossed his third complete game of the spring and improved to 2-1 as the winning pitcher during the nightcap. Scota, who was one out away from his second-straight shutout before Ryan Hendrickson's RBI triple broke it up, struck out two and scattered eight hits in 7.0 innings.

Brandywine built a 3-0 lead after three innings and added four more runs in the fourth. Chris Keenan (Chester, Pa./Strath Haven) scored following a Builder fielding error to put the Lions on the board in the third. Josh Dellipriscoli (Prospect Park, Pa./Interboro) worked a bases-loaded walk to force in a run and Dan McMenamin (Springfield, Pa./Springfield) drove in a run with a ground out.

Dellipriscoli plated two more with a base hit in the fourth, upping his RBI total to three, and McMenamin followed with a run-scoring single. A passed ball allowed Dellipriscoli to cross home with the Lions' final run.

Dellipriscoli reached base four times in five at-bats with two hits and two walks, while Tom Osenbach (Newtown Square, Pa./West Chester Christian) added a pair of base hits and John Gorgone (Ridley, Pa./Ridley) and Nick Horan (Springfield, Pa./Springfield) both scored two runs.

Tyler Woodhouse allowed seven runs in 2.1 innings and took the loss for Apprentice (15-11).

The Builders trailed the Lions 1-0 entering the bottom of the sixth inning of game one, but plated three runs to escape with the victory.

Mike Brumfield's RBI single tied the game, while Collin Wilber and Thomas Richardson were both issued bases-loaded walks later in the frame to account for the final two runs.

Brandywine's lone score came in the top of the sixth when Evan Cline (Swarthmore, Pa./Strath Haven) reached via error and later crossed home following a second Builder miscue.

Brian Bosco (Wallingford, Pa./Strath Haven) struck out three in 5.2 innings, but surrendered three runs on six hits and took the loss. Sam Massie earned the win in relief for Apprentice after firing 1.2 scoreless innings.

Brandywine (7-10, 2-0 PSUAC) returns to conference play on Monday with a home doubleheader against Penn State Hazleton beginning at 2:00 pm.
