Brandywine Splits Home Doubleheader With Beaver

MEDIA, Pennsylvania -- John Gorgone's (Ridley, Pa./Ridley) walkoff single in the eighth inning lifted Penn State Brandywine to victory during a wild, 13-12 game one, but Penn State Beaver earned a split of the PSUAC baseball doubleheader by claiming a 7-4 victory in the nightcap.

Beaver opened up a 4-0 lead through two innings in game one, but Brandywine sent 15 batters to the plate during an eight-run third frame. Tom Osenbach (Newtown Square, Pa./West Chester Christian), who reached base safely during all six plate appearances, doubled in Tommy Crumlish (Upper Darby, Pa./Monsignor Bonner) to start the scoring.

After Evan Cline (Swarthmore, Pa./Strath Haven) drove in Osenbach with a sacrifice fly, Gorgone walked, starting a string of nine consecutive Lions to reach base. Anthony Bianchini (Long Island, N.Y./Long Beach) plated Gorgone with a two-base hit and Josh Dellipriscoli (Prospect Park, Pa./Interboro) followed with a run-scoring double. Crumlish recorded a two-run single and scored on Gabe Encarnacion's (Glenolden, Pa./Interboro) base hit.

Dellipriscoli and Osenbach added RBI singles and Will Scott-Norris (Wilmington, Del./Mt. Pleasant) plate Bianchini with a sacrifice fly as Brandywine built an 11-4 lead in the fourth, but Beaver rallied, scoring  four times in the sixth and then tied the game at 12-12 with four unearned runs in the seventh.

Osenbach doubled to lead off Brandywine's half of the eighth and pinch runner Nick Horan (Springfield, Pa./Springfield) advanced to third following a single by Encarnacion. After Chris Keenan (Chester, Pa./Strath Haven) walked, Gorgone lined a single off the glove of the Beaver first baseman, allowing Horan to score the game-winning run.

Osenbach went 5-for-5 at the plate, scored twice and drove in two, while Encarnacion added four hits and one RBI. Bianchini and Dellipriscoli both tallied two hits and crossed home twice. Troy Mucchetti (Haverford, Pa./Haverford) pitched a scoreless eighth inning to earn the win in relief, his fourth of the season.

Beaver plated four runs in the first inning and tacked on another run in the fourth for a 5-0 lead before Brandywine got on the board in the bottom of the frame with three runs. Bianchini's single allowed Osenbach to score Brandywine's first run and Keenan followed with a two-run double, trimming the Lions' deficit to two.

However, Beaver added insurance runs in the fifth and sixth innings, pushing the lead back to four.

Osenbach legged out an infield single, scoring Dellipriscoli during the bottom of the seventh. Brandywine later put the tying run on first base, but Blase McCarty worked out of the jam, retiring the final two batters to allow Beaver to escape with a 7-4 win.

Osenbach added three more hits in game two and went 8-for-9 at the plate overall on Sunday. Dellipriscoli added two hits and stole a base.

Brian Bosco (Wallingford, Pa./Strath Haven) tossed a complete game, striking out three, but took the loss for Brandywine, while Nick Casasanta improved to 3-0 for Beaver after pitching the first six innings.

Brandywine (15-13, 9-3 PSUAC) visits Penn State Schuylkill on Wednesday for a 2:00 pm doubleheader.
