Brandywine Falls At PSUAC Baseball Tournament

FAYETTEVILLE, Pennsylvania – No. 3 Penn State Beaver bookended the game with a pair of big innings, scoring six times in the first and seven runs during the seventh, and held off second-seeded Penn State Brandywine for a 13-4 victory at the PSUAC Baseball Tournament Wednesday evening.

Beaver sent 11 batters to the plate and used seven hits, all singles, to build its six-run cushion in the top of the first inning.

Brandywine began to chip away, plating a run via error in the first, and Chris Keenan (Chester, Pa./Strath Haven) drove in Evan Cline (Swarthmore, Pa./Strath Haven) with a base hit in the second to make the score 6-2.

Gabe Encarnacion (Glenolden, Pa./Interboro) reached on an error in the fourth that allowed Tom Osenbach (Newtown Square, Pa./West Chester Christian) to score and later crossed home following John Gorgone's (Ridley, Pa./Ridley) RBI single.

However, Beaver answered with seven runs in the top of the seventh to put Brandywine away.

After a rough first inning, Brian Pennock (Kennett Square, Pa./Kennett) settled down to retire 12 of the next 13 batters, but took the loss, dropping his record to 3-3. Pitching for the second time on Wednesday, Blaise McCarty earned the win in relief for Beaver.

Brandywine received eight hits from eight different batters, while McCarty went 3-for-4 at the plate for Beaver.

Brandywine faces elimination Thursday morning when it matches up with No. 5 Penn State Schuylkill at 9:00 am.
