Lions Swept By Carlow In Florida

VERO BEACH, Fla. – Penn State Brandywine was limited to just one run as Carlow swept a softball doubleheader from the Lions on Monday afternoon. The Celtics took game one by a 5-0 count and rallied for a 2-1 victory in game two.

Carlow scored five times during the final three innings to claim the opener. The Celtics strung together four-straight singles to plate a pair in the fifth inning and added two insurance runs in the sixth and one more in the seventh.

Emily Pritts twirled a complete-game shutout, fanning seven, while Katie DeStefano (Kennett Square, Pa./Kennett) suffered the loss in the circle for Brandywine. DeStefano surrendered five runs (three earned) on 12 hits and struck out three in seven innings of work.

Brandywine mustered four hits – three singles and a double off the bat of Katy Steffen (Downingtown, Pa./Downingtown).

Game two was scoreless until the top of the sixth inning when Brandywine broke through for its lone run of the day.

Julia Allman (Broomall, Pa./Marple Newtown) reached on an error to begin the inning and moved to second following Lauryn Geduldick's (Barnegat, N.J./Barnegat) sacrifice bunt. Two batters later, Lindsey Dellavecchio (Ridley, Pa./Interboro) legged out a two-out, infield single to keep the inning alive. Julie Foeldes (Kendall Park, N.J./South New Brunswick) followed with an RBI single that plated Allman.

Brandywine pitcher Cheyenne Murphy (Boothwyn, Pa./Chichester) retired 10-straight hitters from the second through fifth innings, but the first four batters reached base for Carlow in the bottom of the sixth as the Celtics rallied for a pair of runs. Kenzie Young singled in the game-tying run and Sydney Greece added a sacrifice fly that brought home the game-winner.
Murphy took the loss for the Lions despite allowing just two earned runs during a complete-game effort. She allowed five hits and did not walk a batter. Jenna Gorgan gave up one unearned run in seven innings to collect the win for Carlow.
Brandywine (1-2) squares off against NCAA Division II Claflin University (11:00 am) and Indian River State College (4:00 pm) Tuesday in Florida.
