Lions Post Shutout Victories Over Valley Forge

PHOENIXVILLE, Pennsylvania -- Katie DeStefano (Kennett Square, Pa./Kennett) and Danielle Spina (Thornton, Pa./Garnet Valley) both threw one-hit shutouts as the Penn State Brandywine softball team posted a pair of blowout victories over the University of Valley Forge by identical 16-0 scores on Wednesday afternoon.

DeStefano, the reigning PSUAC Pitcher of the Week, tossed her second shutout in as many games. She allowed just one base runner, a second-inning single, and struck out one in 5.0 innings.

Spina retired the final 11 batters she faced to up her record to 4-1 this spring. She fanned eight and did not allow a hit after the first inning.

After a scoreless first inning of the opener, Brandywine erupted for six runs in the second frame. Alexa Iacono (Wilmington, Del./Concord) and Lindsey Dellavecchio (Ridley Park, Pa./Interboro) both worked bases loaded walks and Robyn Gannon (Lansdowne, Pa./Archibishop Prendergast) added a two-run single.

The Lions added two runs in both the third and fourth innings and tacked on six more in the fifth. Iacono and Cheyenne Murphy (Boothwyn, Pa./Chichester) capped the scoring with back-to-back two-run doubles.

Lauryn Geduldick (Barnegat, N.J./Barnegat) led the offense with three hits and scored two runs, while Gannon added two hits and two runs and Murphy scored three times and drove in a pair.

Brandywine opened the second game with five first-inning runs as Gannon, Spina and Katy Steffen (Downingtown, Pa./Downingtown) all recorded run-scoring hits.

Murphy added a run in the second with an RBI single and Dellavecchio doubled in Jen Patterson (Springfield, Pa./Springfield) in the third before the Lions ballooned their lead to 15 with seven additional runs in the fourth inning.

Geduldick reached on an error to lead off and scored on Julie Foeldes' (Kendall Park, N.J./South Brunswick) triple. Geduldick then cleared the bases during her second at-bat of the inning with a three-base hit of her own.

Five Lions scored twice during game two, while Dellavecchio crossed home three times. Geduldick and Gannon both drove in three.

Brandywine (6-5, 2-0 PSUAC), winners of five-straight games, is back in action Friday afternoon in its home opener against St. Joseph's (Vt.) at 3:00 pm.
