Brandywine Tops Norwich During Florida Finale

VERO BEACH, Florida – The Penn State Brandywine softball team ended its Spring Break trip to Florida on a high note, topping Norwich 6-3 in its Vero Beach finale on Wednesday night. Earlier in the day, the Lions suffered a 6-0 setback against South Carolina-Sumter.

Lindsey Dellavecchio (Ridley Park, Pa./Interboro) and Lauryn Geduldick (Barnegat, N.J./Barnegat) provided the spark for the Lions' offense against Norwich. Dellavecchio recorded three hits, drove in one and scored once, while Geduldick provided two hits and scored three times. Both also stole a base.

Brandywine took a 1-0 lead during the top of the first inning when Gedulick singled and eventually crossed home after a wild pitch, but the Cadets answered with a pair of scores during the bottom of the frame.

The Lions retook the lead with a pair of third-inning runs as Katy Steffen (Downingtown, Pa./Downingtown) and Robyn Gannon (Lansdowne, Pa./Archibishop Prendergast) provided hits that drove in Geduldick and Dellavecchio. Brandywine added its fourth run during the fourth inning when Dellavecchio and Geduldick pulled off a double steal and Geduldick crossed home.

After Norwich pulled within 4-3, Dellavecchio and Alexa Iacono (Wilmington, Del./Concord) tacked on insurance runs with RBI singles during the sixth and seventh innings, respectively.

Danielle Spina (Thornton, Pa./Garnet Valley) earned her second victory of the spring, allowing just one earned run in seven innings. She struck out one and was aided by a pair of outfield assists from Cheyenne Murphy (Boothwyn, Pa./Chichester) and Dellavecchio, who both threw out runners at home plate.

Sumter took a 1-0 lead after one inning in game one and tacked on three more scores in the third before adding single runs in the fifth and sixth frames.

Brandywine recorded just three hits, all singles. Gannon led off the top of the fifth inning with a base hit and Jen Patterson (Springfield, Pa./Springfield) moved Gannon to second with a two-out, infield single; however, Brandywine was unable to push a run across.

Geduldick recorded the Lions' third hit, a second-inning single.

Charley Prince worked the first five innings in the circle to earn the win for Sumter, while Katie DeStefano (Kennett Square, Pa./Kennett) suffered the loss for Brandywine after allowing six runs (two earned) and striking out four.

Brandywine returns to Pennsylvania to face Cabrini on March 18 at 3:00 pm in Radnor.
