Division II Claflin Downs Brandywine

VERO BEACH, Fla. – The Penn State Brandywine softball team dropped an 8-0 decision in five innings to NCAA Division II Claflin University on Tuesday morning in Vero Beach, Fla.

Claflin pitcher Nyesha Arnold retired the first 12 batters she faced before Katy Steffen (Downingtown, Pa./Downingtown) broke up the perfect game with a leadoff single in the fifth inning.

Lindsey Dellavecchio (Ridley, Pa./Interboro) followed Steffen's hit with an infield single, but Arnold held Brandywine off the scoreboard to end the game.

Claflin, already playing its 14th game of the season, received five strikeouts from Arnold as she picked up her 10th victory in the circle. Brandywine starter Katie DeStefano (Kennett Square, Pa./Kennett) allowed eight runs (six earned), while striking out two and was saddled with the loss.

The Panthers scored four times during the first inning and tacked on a pair of runs during the second and fourth frames.

Brandywine is back in action later this afternoon when it visits Indian River State College at 4:00 pm.
