Penn State Brandywine
AKRON, Ohio – A pair of three-run innings were the difference as sixth-seeded New Hampshire Technological Institute upset third-seeded Penn State Brandywine 6-0 during the Lions' opening game of the USCAA Softball World Series on Monday afternoon at Firestone Stadium.
Brandywine faces elimination tonight at 6:00 pm when it battles No. 10 Cincinnati-Clermont, which was routed 9-1 in five innings by St. Joseph's (Brooklyn) earlier in the day.
After Katie DeStefano (Kennett Square, Pa./Kennett) retired the first two batters during the second inning, NHTI pieced together three hits and took advantage of a Brandywine error, scoring three unearned runs.
The Lynx tacked on insurance tallies in the sixth as Masha Lange and Alexandra Pellerin delivered run-scoring hits.
Brandywine was limited to just four hits, including two off the bat of Lindsey Dellavecchio (Ridley Park, Pa./Interboro).
NHTI pitcher Tori Lemay kept Brandywine off balance all day, fanning 15 Lions. DeStefano, named a first team all-American on Sunday night, dropped to 9-7 after striking out five and surrendering six runs (two earned).
