Brandywine Escapes With 77-73 Triumph Over York

MEDIA, Pa. – Jessy Gledhill (Secane, Pa./Cardinal O'Hara) scored 19 points and Lauren Munro (Glenolden, Pa./Interboro) tallied 15 points as the Penn State Brandywine women's basketball team fought off Penn State York for a 77-73 victory on Saturday afternoon.

The Lions led for nearly the entire first quarter and closed out the first stanza with a four-point edge following a pair of Brandi James (Glenolden, Pa./Interboro) free throws.

Brandywine extended the lead to nine as Munro drained back-to-back jumpers, but York chipped away closing the deficit to one point on two occasions before knotting the score at the break after a free throw from Karra Thompson.

The third quarter featured two more tie scores before a quick, 9-0 spurt from the Lions, aided by four points from Gledhill and Munro's three-point play, made the score 47-38 at the 5:26 mark.

York narrowed the gap to four just two minutes later, but Dent sank a pair of baskets and Jilly Gledhill (Secane, Pa./Cardinal O'Hara) knocked down a triple and a fast-break layup to spur another 9-0 run.

Again, York answered, scoring seven-straight and 13 of the game's next 15 points, tying the game at 60-60 with 7:13 to play.

Brandywine trailed by five points, but two baskets from Munro and a layup from Nicolette Napoleon (Springfield, Pa./Penn Charter) knotted the score at 66-66.

Free throws from Jilly and Jessy Gledhill vaulted Brandywine back in front by three, but York closed to within one twice over the next two minutes. Jessy Gledhill's jumper pushed the lead back to three with 55 seconds to play and Encarnacion, Dent and Jessy Gledhill sank free throws during the final 24 seconds to help Brandywine hold on.

Dent registered 11 points, five rebounds and four assists, while Jessy Gledhill pulled down six boards and Jilly Gledhill collected nine points and seven boards.

Brandywine shot 45 percent from the field, but York kept the game close by making 28-of-36 free throws.

Brandywine (11-7, 5-4 PSUAC) hosts Penn State Mont Alto Wednesday at 6:00 pm.
