Lions Sweep Central Penn In Final Non-League Match

MEDIA, Pennsylvania -- The Penn State Brandywine volleyball team earned its seventh-straight victory with a 3-0 (25-9, 25-10, 25-13) triumph over Central Penn on Thursday night.

The Lions ran out to a 14-5 lead during the first set and pushed their edge to 21-8 following an ace from freshman Nicole Poissant (Aston, Pa./Cardinal O'Hara). Back-to-back kills from junior Kelsi Wiest (Aston, Pa./Sun Valley) and Poissant gave Brandywine the first set.

Three consecutive service aces from junior Kimberly Russo (West Chester, Pa./West Chester East) handed Brandywine an 8-2 edge in set two. Poissant added two aces before kills by Poissant and junior Nicole Costa (Landsdowne, Pa./Upper Darby) allowed the Lions to claim the second set.

With the third frame tied 6-6, Poissant registered a kill to start an 8-0 run for the Lions and Costa ballooned the lead to 20-9 with back-to-back kills, giving Brandywine an insurmountable advantage.

Brandywine tallied 18 aces as a team led by six from Russo and four each by Poissant and junior Miranda Biondi (Newtown Square, Pa./Marple Newtown). Biondi also amassed 15 assists, while Poissant added 13 assists and seven kills.

Costa paced the Lions by accumulating eight kills, while Russo collected a team-high 10 digs and Wiest added nine.

Brandywine hosts Penn State DuBois and Penn State York in a PSUAC tri-match on Saturday beginning at noon.
