Brandywine Hosts York Wednesday In PSUAC Volleyball Quarterfinals

MEDIA, Pennsylvania -- Penn State Brandywine has earned the No. 2 seed in the Pennsylvania State University Athletic Conference Volleyball Tournament and will host seventh-seeded Penn State York in a quarterfinal match Wednesday at 7:00 pm.

Brandywine, which will play host to a quarterfinal for the fourth consecutive year, posted a 14-2 league record this fall, with all 14 of its victories coming by a 3-0 margin under the guidance of fifth-year Head Coach Melissa Algeo. Prior to Algeo's arrival, the Lions had not hosted a conference tournament match since 2001.

Brandywine cruised to a pair of wins against York during the regular season, including a home sweep on Saturday. Junior Nicole Costa paced the offense with eight kills, while classmate Miranda Biondi added 17 assists and four aces and freshman Nicole Poissant tallied nine aces. Junior Kimberly Russo collected a team-best eight digs.

The national leader in aces, Biondi has collected 94 this fall, along with 447 assists. Poissant ranks third in the PSUAC with 70 aces, while Costa is third in both kills (177) and blocks (68) and Russo stands second in digs (259).

Brandywine owns an 8-0 record against York during the last four seasons, having dropped just one set during those eight matches.

York lost two straight and four of its last five matches to close out the regular season. It posted a a 10-8 record overall, including an 8-6 mark against PSUAC competition. Jasmine Berry has tallied a team-high 118 kills, while Kate Basgall dished out 241 assists.

Wednesday's additional quarterfinal matches have regular-season champion Fayette hosting No. 8 New Kensington; No. 6 Lehigh Valley visiting No. 3 Mont Alto; and No. 5 Greater Allegheny traveling to No. 4 Beaver.

With a victory Wednesday, Brandywine would host a semifinal match on Friday at 7:00 pm against the winner of the Mont Alto-Lehigh Valley match. The championship will be played Sunday in Rec Hall at University Park, Pa.
