Lions’ Comeback Bid Falls One Run Short

ASTON, Pa. -- Penn State Brandywine brought the potential game-winning run to the plate in the ninth inning, but the Lions' rally was thwarted by a double play as Marywood hung on to top Brandywine 8-7 in non-conference baseball action on Tuesday night.

Trailing 8-2 entering the bottom of the eighth inning, Nate Turner (Dover, Del./Dover) got the rally started by launching his first home run of the season over the right-center field fence. Later in the frame, David Kursman (Pennsauken, N.J./Pennsauken) reached thanks to an error, moved to third via wild pitch and scored on a sacrifice fly from Mike DeGirolamo (Frederick, Md./Frederick) to make the score 8-4.

Brandywine continued to make a push during its final at-bat as Ryan Snyder (Aston, Pa./Sun Valley) legged out an infield single and came around to score when Ryan Brown (Bensalem, Pa./Bensalem) laced a triple into the left-center field gap. After Turner worked a four-pitch walk, a wild pitch put two runners in scoring position for Kursman, who delivered a two-run base hit, bringing the Lions within one.

A Marywood pitching change brought Owen Reilly to the mound with the game-winning run at home plate and one out, but Reilly needed just one pitch to get the final two outs, turning a game-ending double play.

The Pacers scored five times during the first two frames to build an early 5-0 edge before the Lions struck for single runs in the third and fourth innings. Evan Shade (Green Lane, Pa./Upper Perkiomen) doubled and scored on Snyder's two-base hit in the third and then drove in DeGirolamo with a ground out one inning later.

Marywood answered with a run in the fifth and tacked on two more during the sixth inning to extended its lead to 8-2.

Brown and Snyder both produced two hits, one run scored and one RBI for the Lions, while Turner reached base safely four times after working three free passes.

Highlighting five Brandywine pitchers were Josh Hess (Panama City, Fla./Arnold) and Ty Coccia (West Chester, Pa./West Chester East), who both posted scoreless appearances. Hess went 2.0 innings, striking out two, and Coccia worked the ninth inning, recording one strikeout. Nick Gordon (Chester Heights, Pa./Garnet Valley) yielded one run during 3.0 frames of relief, while Nate Romberger (Collegeville, Pa./Perkiomen School) was saddled with the loss.

Brandywine (2-4) heads to Florida for six games at the RussMatt Invitational beginning Saturday against Stockton University at 7:00 PM.
