Errors Prove Costly As Lions Drop Two To Elms

DAVENPORT, Fla. – Errors in the field were too much to overcome as the Penn State Brandywine baseball team dropped both ends of a doubleheader to Elms College by scores of 14-2 and 13-11 on Tuesday night.

Game One: Elms 14, Penn State Brandywine 2

Miscues in the field aided Elms in scoring 14 runs as the Blazers topped the Lions 14-2 in the opening game of the twin bill.

Brandywine committed five errors during the first two innings as Elms build a 6-0 lead. The Blazers plated runs during each of the first five frames to expand the margin at large as 14 runs.

The Lions got on the board with a pair of runs during the bottom of the fifth inning. Brody Oyloe (Redmond, Ore./Redmond) was hit by a pitch, moved to third on Jamey Massung's (Philippsburg, Pa./Philipsburg-Osceola) double and crossed home via wild pitch. Three batters later, Ian Merrin (Upper Chichester, Pa./Chichester) plated Massung with a ground ball.

Massung recorded Brandywine's lone extra-base hit of the day among its five knocks, while Jimmy Carey (Springfield, Pa./Bonner-Prendie) singled and walked in two plate appearances.

Game Two: Elms 13, Penn State Brandywine 11

Brandywine spotted Elms a 6-0 lead through one inning as an error led to five unearned runs crossing the plate.

The Lions got three runs back when Ryan Snyder (Aston, Pa./Sun Valley) lifted a bases-clearing triple into the gap, cutting the Blazers' lead in half.

Elms got a pair of runs in the second, but Brandywine answered with a solo home run from Nate Turner (Dover, Del./Dover) and a run-scoring single from Massung to make the count 8-5 in the third.

Shawn Webb (Drexel Hill, Pa./Bonner-Prendie) tripled and scored on Turner's sacrifice fly in the fourth as Brandywine once again climbed within four.

The Lions scored three more times one frame later as Snyder, Webb and David Kursman (Pennsauken, N.J./Pennsauken) all tallied RBI singles.

Elms scored a pair of insurance runs in the sixth to make the score 13-9. Those runs would come up big because Brandywine scored twice in its final at-bat and brought the potential tying run to the plate.

Back-to-back singles to start the frame got Brandywine's final rally going. An error allowed Carey to cross home with the Lions' 10th run. Two batters later, Evan Shade (Green Lane, Pa./Upper Perkiomen) lined a two-out double down the left field line, allowing Snyder to score, but a runner was thrown out at the plate, ending the rally.

Snyder went 3-for-5 at the plate with four RBI and two runs scored, while Webb tallied three hits. Massung, Kursman, Ryan Brown (Bensalem, Pa./Bensalem) and Miguel Rodriguez (Harrisburg, Pa./Central Dauphin) all collected two hits.

Brandywine (2-8) closes out its Spring Break trip Wednesday against SUNY Cobleskill at 3:45 PM.
