Cairn Rallies To Edge Brandywine 5-4

LANGHORNE, Pa. -- Cairn scored three times during the bottom of the sixth inning as the Highlanders overcame a three-run deficit and defeated the Penn State Brandywine baseball team 5-4 on Thursday afternoon.

Three of Brandywine's first four batters recorded a base hit to give the Lions a 1-0 lead through one inning. Ryan Snyder (Aston, Pa./Sun Valley) led off with a single, advanced to second on David Kursman's (Pennsauken, N.J./Pennsauken) base hit and scored thanks to Nate Turner's (Dover, Del./Dover) knock.

Two more runs scored for the Lions in the third. Jamey Massung's (Philipsburg, Pa./Philipsburg-Osceola) single, plus a throwing error, allowed Kursman to come around to score. Three batters later, Massung crossed home following Daniel Rohlsen's (Macungie, Pa./Emmaus) groundout.

Cairn got two runs back in the fourth inning, but Brandywine added a fourth run two frames later as Turner doubled in Shawn Webb (Drexel Hill, Pa./Bonner-Prendie), who singled to open the inning.

The hosts responded with three runs during the bottom of the frame to take the lead for good. Tyler Warr tied the score with a two-run home run before Nathan Shurga's run-scoring double put the Highlanders in front.

Turner tallied three of Brandywine's 10 hits, while Daniel Horowitz (Mechanicsville, Va./Atlee) singled twice in four at-bats to lead the offense.

Justin Bray (Christiana, Pa./Octorara) worked the first 3.2 innings on the mound, striking out two and allowing two runs, while Toby Skeans (Stevensville, Md./Kent Island) fanned four, but allowed three runs in 2.1 frames to take the loss. Ty Coccia (West Chester, Pa./West Chester East) and Jack Johnston (Coatesville, Pa./Coatesville) both tossed scoreless innings in relief.

Brandywine opens United East Conference play Saturday at Wilson beginning at noon.
