Snyder Records 100th Hit; Brandywine Splits One-Run Games
KING OF PRUSSIA, PA. – Penn State Brandywine and Rosemont College split a pair of one-run games in a non-conference baseball doubleheader on Sunday. Ryan Snyder (Aston, Pa./Sun Valley) recorded the 100th hit of his career during an 8-7 Brandywine victory in the opener, while Rosemont earned the split with a 6-5 triumph in game two.
Game One: Penn State Brandywine 8, Rosemont 7 (8 innings)
Snyder led off the game with hit No. 100, a base hit through the left side of the infield. He is the 14th Brandywine baseball player to reach 100 career hits during the 42-year history of the program.
Snyder's single was one of five during the first inning for the Lions, who built a 2-0 lead. Owen Lawton (Glenmoore, Pa./Downingtown East) and Evan Shade (Green Lane, Pa./Upper Perkiomen) delivered run-scoring base hits during the frame.
Brandywine upped its lead to 5-1 during the fourth inning by tacking on three more runs. Snyder was hit by a pitch with the bases loaded to force in a run before Toby Skeans (Stevensville, Md./Kent Island) doubled in two more. One inning later, an error allowed Shade to cross home, upping the count to 6-1.
Rosemont used a three-run home run to draw within two through five innings. After a Nate Turner (Dover, Del./Dover) RBI single in the sixth, the hosts tied the count with three runs during the bottom of the frame.
A scoreless seventh inning sent the game to extra frames. Skeans recorded a one-out single in the eighth and moved to second when Brody Oyloe (Redmond, Ore./Redmond) roped a base hit to left. Two batters later, Tommy Zotollo (Washington Township, N.J./St. Joseph's Regional) delivered the go-ahead run with a two-out single.
Rosemont loaded the bases during the bottom of the eighth, but Jack Johnston (Coatesville, Pa./Coatesville) rolled a double-play ball to end the game. Johnston earned the save, while Logan Bartels (Cooper City, Fla./Cooper City) worked two innings in relief of Justin Bray (Christiana, Pa./Octorara) to record the win.
Skeans and Turner both went 3-for-5 at the plate and each scored a run. The Lions produced 13 hits overall.
Game Two: Rosemont 6, Penn State Brandywine 5
Rosemont plated three runs during the fourth and fifth innings to rally from a pair of two-run deficits and earn the split in game two.
Oyloe's first-career home run gave the Lions a 1-0 edge in the second and Lawton pushed Turner across the plate with a third-inning single to give Brandywine a 2-0 advantage.
After Rosemont scored three times in the fourth, Brandywine needed just one hit to answer with three runs in the fifth. Shade and Ryan Brown (Bensalem, Pa./Bensalem) were both hit by a pitch with the bases loaded, while Zotollo worked a bases-loaded walk to force in another run.
Rosemont countered with three markers during the bottom of the frame, including a two-out, two-run single that gave the Ravens the lead for good.
Lawton accounted for half of Brandywine's hits with a 3-for-4 performance, while Turner doubled twice in four at-bats and scored two runs.
Brandywine visits Penn State Abington for a 3:30 PM United East Conference game on Wednesday.
