Wright, Nearey Twirl Shutouts In Baseball Sweep

ASTON, Pa. – Penn State Brandywine ran its record to 4-0 as Tyler Wright (Coatesville, Pa./Coatesville) and Dan Nearey (Aston, Pa./Sun Valley) both spun complete-game shutouts in victories over Penn State York late Friday night. The Lions opened with a 10-0 triumph and claimed the nightcap 7-0.

Game One: Penn State Brandywine 10, Penn State York 0

Wright scattered five hits, all singles, to earn his first Brandywine victory in the opener. He struck out eight over five innings of work.

After a scoreless first three innings, Brandywine put crooked numbers on the scoreboard in the fourth, fifth and sixth frames.

Tyler Brooks (Oxford, Pa./Oxford) started the scoring with an RBI double, while Dalton Palmer (Shrewsbury, Pa./Susquehannock) and Evan Abegg (Commerce City, Colo./Prairie View) both added run-scoring base hits.

Brooks added another RBI double one inning later and scored via York throwing error. Hayden Altimari (Dix Hills, N.Y./St. Anthony's) reached on a fielder's choice, allowing Lamar Thomas (Philadelphia, Pa./Philadelphia Performing Arts Academy) to score.

Kyle Oechsle (Coopersburg, Pa./Palisades) tacked on a double that plated Abegg, while Altimari provided a bases-clearing double two batters later to complete the scoring in game one.

Altimari drove in four runs and scored twice. Oechsle, Abegg and Brooks all added two hits, while Palmer, Thomas and Brooks each swiped two bases.

Game Two: Penn State Brandywine 7, Penn State York 0

Nearey struck out 11 York batters, two off a Brandywine single-game record, and yielded just one base hit over seven innings. He held York without a hit through 4.2 innings before a two-out single in the fifth broke up his no-hit bid.

Nearey received all of the backing he would need in the second inning from his battery mate as Brian Reynolds (Newtown Square, Pa./Marple Newtown) recorded a three-run double. Reynolds added a two-run single two frames later as part of a 3-for-3 night at the plate during game two.

Thomas stole third and came around to score on a York error to plate Brandywine's fourth run of the second inning, while Nick Wright (Aston, Pa./Sun Valley) pushed Abegg across the plate with a double in the fifth to account for Brandywine's seven runs.

Abegg registered his second two-hit game of the day and Wright doubled twice, while Thomas swiped to more bags.

Brandywine (4-0) visits York for two more games Saturday afternoon beginning at 2:00 pm.
