Brandywine Falls At Hazleton

ASTON, Pa. -- The Penn State Brandywine baseball team dropped both ends of a doubleheader Saturday afternoon at Penn State Hazleton, putting an end to the team's six-game winning streak. Hazleton claimed the opener 5-0 and won the nightcap 6-5 in extra innings.

Game One: Penn State Hazleton 5, Penn State Brandywine 0

Hazleton starting pitcher Colin Stauffer struck out 12 in 5.0 innings and combined with Mark Kokinda to shut out Brandywine, giving the Lions their second loss of the season.

Tyler Wright (Coatesville, Pa./Coatesville) fanned nine batters and went the distance on the mound for Brandywine, but suffered his first loss of the year after yielding five earned runs.

Brandywine was limited to a pair of singles off the bats of Dalton Palmer (Shrewsbury, Pa./Susquehannock) and Kyle Oechsle (Coopersburg, Pa./Palisades).

Hazleton broke a scoreless draw by plating three runs in the fifth inning and two more scores one frame later.

Game Two: Penn State Hazleton 6, Penn State Brandywine 5 (8 innings)

Nick Ciszak's two-out, RBI single walked Hazleton off with a victory in eight innings in game two.

Brandywine had rallied to tie the game twice, including a game-tying solo home run from Tyler Brooks (Oxford, Pa./Oxford) in the seventh inning that helped send the contest to extra frames.

Brooks collected two hits, as did Nick Razzano (South River, N.J./South River) and Oechsle.

The Lions trailed 4-0 entering the fourth inning before striking for four runs to knot the score. Hayden Altimari (Dix Hills, N.Y./St. Anthony) moved to third on Conor Dowdell's (Havertown, Pa./Haverford) double and scored Brandywine's first run on a wild pitch. Two batters later, Keaton Janiszewski (Dunedin, Fla./Keswick Christian) doubled in Dowdell. Palmer added an RBI double and then scored on an error to tie the count.

Hazleton retook the lead with a run on three hits in the fifth, but Brooks sent the game to extra innings with a leadoff shot, his second of the season, to begin the seventh.

Michael Paytas (Broomall, Pa./Marple Newtown) pitched the first three innings for Brandywine, striking out six, while allowing four runs. Ricky Palmer (Levittown, Pa./Pennsbury) received his first loss after yielding two runs and fanning one over the final 4.2 innings.

Brandywine (10-3, 6-3 PSUAC) closes out the regular season Monday with a doubleheader at Penn State Schuylkill beginning at 2:00 pm.
