Brandywine Edges Scranton 7-4

ASTON, Pa. -- Making its return from a two-week absence, the Penn State Brandywine baseball team topped Penn State Scranton 7-4 on Tuesday night at Maple Zone to improve to 9-1 this spring.

Tyler Brooks (Oxford, Pa./Oxford) and Nick Wright (Aston, Pa./Sun Valley) led the way for the offense as both produced a three-hit effort and drove in a run. Wright also stole four bases and Brooks swiped one, while Cam Baughman (Oxford, Pa./Oxford) added two hits and an RBI. Brandywine collected seven stolen bases overall.

Scranton owned a 2-0 lead heading to the bottom of the first, but Brandywine trimmed the margin in half as Evan Abegg (Commerce City, Colo./Prairie View) laced a two-out double and later scored on an error. One inning later, the Lions tied the score via consecutive doubles from Baughman and Brian Reynolds (Newtown Square, Pa./Marple Newtown).

Scranton went back on top with a third inning run before the Lions plated four during the bottom of the frame to take the lead for good. Abegg reached on an error and scored on Brooks' triple to knot the score 3-3 before Wright's single scored Brooks with the go-ahead run. Two batters later, Toby Skeans (Stevensville, Md./Kent Island) singled in Wright, while Hayden Altimari (Dix Hills, N.Y./St. Anthony's) scored on Baughman's ground out to cap the inning.

Brandywine plated its final run during the fourth inning when Wright legged out an infield single and pinch-runner Dalton Palmer (Shrewsbury, Pa./Susquehannock) scored on a throwing error.

Ben Mutz (Swarthmore, Pa./Strath Haven) got the start on the mound for the Lions and struck out four during his two innings of work.

Four Brandywine relievers did not allow an earned run over the final seven frames.

Ricky Palmer (Levittown, Pa./Pennsbury) tossed two innings and fanned one, earning his third win of the spring, while Tyler Wright (Coatesville, Pa./Coatesville) fired a scoreless fifth inning, striking out two. Michael Paytas (Broomall, Pa./Marple Newtown) collected two strikeouts during his three innings on the mound and Nick Razzano (South River, N.J./South River) picked up the save by holding Scranton off the scoreboard in the ninth. Razzano also struck out a pair of batters.

Brandywine (9-1, 5-1 PSUAC) plays the first game of a three-game weekend series against Penn State Hazleton Friday at Maple Zone beginning at 3:00 pm.
