Brandywine Finishes Third At PSUAC Baseball Tournament

DUBOIS, Pa. – The Penn State Brandywine baseball team dropped a pair of Penn State University Athletic Conference Tournament games on Monday afternoon as the Lions bowed out of the conference postseason in third place. The Lions fell 7-2 to Penn State Mont Alto and 11-5 to Penn State DuBois.

Game One: Penn State Mont Alto 7, Penn State Brandywine 2

Mont Alto scored during its final three at-bats to claim the winners' bracket game against Brandywine.

The Lions trimmed a two-run deficit in half as Tyler Brooks (Oxford, Pa./Oxford) scored via error in the fourth, but Mont Alto answered with three runs in the bottom of the frame. Mont Alto added single runs during the fifth and sixth innings.

Brandywine added a second run following Kyle Oechsle's (Coopersburg, Pa./Palisades) run-scoring single that plated Ben Mutz (Swarthmore, Pa./Strath Haven) in the sixth.

Mutz led Brandywine at the plate with three hits in four at-bats, while Cam Baughman (Oxford, Pa./Oxford) added two hits.

Tyler Wright (Coatesville, Pa./Coatesville) took the loss on the mound for Brandywine. Dan Nearey (Aston, Pa./Sun Valley) fanned five over 5.0 innings of relief, while Matt Brucato (Jamesburg, N.J./Monroe Township) pitched a scoreless final inning.

Game Two: Penn State DuBois 11, Penn State Brandywine 5

DuBois scored five third inning runs and extended its lead to seven one stanza later in the tournament's first elimination game of the day.

Brandywine, which collected 10 hits, pushed its first two runs across in the fifth as Nick Wright (Aston, Pa./Sun Valley) provided an RBI single and Evan Abegg (Commerce City, Colo./Prairie View) used a sacrifice fly to score Mutz.

Abegg knocked in his second run of the day in the seventh with a base hit, while Julian Clark (Somerdale, N.J./Sterling) added an RBI double.

Abegg, Mutz and Brian Reynolds (Newtown Square, Pa./Marple Newtown) all produced two hits at the plate.

Ricky Palmer (Levittown, Pa./Pennsbury) struck out two and allowed just one earned run in two-plus innings, but suffered the loss. Connor Thompson (Finksburg, Md./Westminster) tossed two scoreless innings of relief.

Brandywine will be the No. 8 seed in next week's USCAA World Series and open the tournament Monday against top-seeded Cincinnati-Clermont at a time still to be determined.
