Brooks’ Slam Helps Brandywine Stay Alive At USCAA World Series

DUBOIS, Pa. – Tyler Brooks (Oxford, Pa./Oxford) belted a grand slam as part of a six-run fourth inning and No. 8 Penn State Brandywine staved off elimination with a 10-5 triumph over No. 5 Wright State-Lake late Monday night at the United States Collegiate Athletic Association Baseball World Series.

Brooks' grand slam came with two outs as he launched his team-leading fourth home run of the season just inside the left field foul pole. That was his second of three hits during a 3-for-5 night at the plate as he fell a triple shy of the cycle.

Brooks drove in five runs overall after opening the scoring with a two-out, RBI double that plated Brian Reynolds (Newtown Square, Pa./Marple Newtown) in the third inning.

Toby Skeans (Stevensville, Md./Kent Island) worked a bases-loaded walk to move the margin to 2-0 in the fourth and Evan Abegg (Commerce City, Colo./Prairie View) crossed home following a WSU-Lake error before Brooks' slam capped the inning.

The Lakers scored the game's next four runs to get within 7-4, but Hayden Altimari's (Dix Hills, N.Y./St. Anthony's) two-out, bases-loaded single in the sixth pushed the margin back to five runs. Wright State got one run back in the sixth before Skeans crossed home via error in the seventh to provide the final count.

Altimari provided three hits in four at-bats and drove in two, while Skeans and Ben Mutz (Swarthmore, Pa./Strath Haven) both posted a hit and two runs scored.

Three Brandywine pitchers combined to hold the Lakers to four hits and strike out 14 batters.

Connor Thompson (Finksburg, Md./Westminster) worked the first 3.2 innings to earn the win. He struck out six and limited Wright State-Lake to two hits and one earned run. Tyler Wright (Coatesville, Pa./Coatesville) fanned five during his 2.1 innings on the hill and Mutz closed out the game with three strikeouts in the seventh.

Brandywine (13-7) will face either Mississippi University for Women or Penn State DuBois in another elimination game Tuesday evening at 5:45 PM.
