Brandywine Falls Short In First-Ever USCAA World Series Game

DUBOIS, Pa. – Top-seeded Cincinnati-Clermont scored eight times during the first two innings and defeated eighth-seeded Penn State Brandywine 13-4 during the Lions' first-ever United States Collegiate Athletic Association Baseball World Series game on Monday afternoon.

USCAA Home Run Derby champion Tyler Gulley hit a three-run shot in the first and Keegan Corbett recorded a bases-clearing double during a five-run second inning to give UC-Clermont a 8-0 lead through two innings.

Despite putting runners on base during the first three innings, Brandywine was held off the scoreboard until the fourth when the Lions struck for three runs. Two walks and a single loaded the bases for Hayden Altimari (Dix Hills, N.Y./St. Anthony's), who delivered a run-scoring single. Two batters later, Cam Baughman (Oxford, Pa./Oxford) produced a two-run base hit, making the score 8-3 after four innings.

However, the Cougars tacked on a run in the fifth and four more in the sixth. Kyle Oechsle (Coopersburg, Pa./Palisades) was hit by a pitch with the bases loaded in the seventh to provide the final run for the Lions.

Ben Mutz (Swarthmore, Pa./Strath Haven) tallied three hits and reached base safely four times overall to pace the Brandywine offense. Matt Brucato (Jamesburg, N.J./Monroe Township) limited UCC to one earned run and struck out a pair over 2.0 innings to highlight four Brandywine pitchers out of the bullpen.

Brandywine will face Wright State-Lake in an elimination game Monday evening at 8:30 pm.
