Brandywine Bests Rain, Wind, Hazleton

ASTON, Pa. -- The Penn State Brandywine women's soccer team weathered the wind and rain on Thursday afternoon, completing a 4-2 non-conference victory over Penn State Hazleton at Maple Zone. With the victory, Brandywine improved to 6-1 on the season, while Hazleton dropped to 2-4.

The Lions got the scoring started in the eighth minute when Brooke Muhlbaier (Millville, N.J./Millville) got behind the defense and beat Hazleton goalkeeper Julianne Ernest with a low shot through the wind.

Hazleton equaled the score at the 25:15 mark; however, Ami Iannello (Media, Pa./Strath Haven) put Brandywine back in front with her second goal of the year just over four minutes later. Brianna Banks (Philadelphia, Pa./Parkway Center) added a third goal to give the Lions a two-score lead at the break.

The score remained the same until the 82nd minute when Katie Oldziejewskie brought Hazleton back to within one. Two minutes later, however, Banks tacked on an insurance goal, her team-leading 17th of the year, to help Brandywine preserve its fifth-straight win.

The Lions outshot Hazleton 10-5 and attempted at six of the game's corner kicks. Ernest made six saves, while Brandywine net minder Emily Bush (Bayville, N.J./Bayville) blocks three shots to pick up her sixth win of the year.

Brandywine (6-1, 4-0 PSUAC) returns to conference play on Tuesday with a home game against Penn State Schuylkill at 2:00 pm.
