Brandywine Opens Softball Season In Florida With Setbacks

CLERMONT, Fla. -- The Penn State Brandywine softball team got its 2016 season started in Florida on Saturday, but suffered a pair of setbacks to NCAA Division III opponents. The Lions were defeated 9-0 by Rochester (N.Y.) and 8-0 by Brandeis.

Rochester scored eight runs during the first inning and Yellow Jackets' starting pitcher Sam Malecki fanned eight batters over four innings to earn the win.

The Lions mustered just three hits, all singles, with two coming off the bat of Arianna Segich (Ocean City, N.J./Ocean City) and one from Olivia Encarnacion (Glenolden, Pa./Interboro).

Brandeis plated three runs in the first inning and put the game away with a four-run fifth inning.

Robyn Gannon (Lansdowne, Pa./Archbishop Prendergast) and Julia Allman (Broomall, Pa./Marple Newtown) recorded Brandywine's two hits as both collected fourth-inning singles.

The Lions (0-2) will look to bounce back Sunday evening when they face Wesleyan (Ga.) at 5:00 pm and Thiel (Pa.) at 7:00 pm.
