CLERMONT, Fla. -- During its second day of Spring Break games in Florida, the Penn State Brandywine softball team dropped games against Wesleyan (Ga.) and Thiel (Pa.). Wesleyan took the opener 8-0 in five innings, while the Tomcats claimed the nightcap 13-2.
Wesleyan scored runs in each of its four at-bats, plating four in the first, a pair in the second and scoring single runs in the third and fourth innings. Melissa Webb shut down the Brandywine offense, recording a three-hit shutout, while striking out nine.
Robyn Gannon (Lansdowne, Pa./Archbishop Prendergast), Katy Steffen (Downingtown, Pa./Downingtown West) and Julie Foeldes (Kendall Park, N.J./South Brunswick) tallied Brandywine's three hits which were all singles.
In game two, Thiel scored three times during the top of the first inning as Miranda Reesman tripled in a pair and then scored on a passed ball. The Lions answered with a run in the bottom of the frame when Arianna Segich (Ocean City, N.J./Ocean City) walked, stole second, moved to third on a wild pitch and crossed home following a second wild pitch.
However, Thiel pushed five additional runs across in the third and put the game away with a five-run seventh inning.
Segich went 2-for-2 at the plate and reached base three times overall, while knocking in Brandywine's second run when she was hit by a pitch with the bases loaded in the fourth. Gannon also reached base three times and collected her second hit of the day, a seventh-inning single.
Brandywine (0-4) looks for its first win of the season Monday afternoon with games against Susquehanna (1:00 pm) and Lakeland (Wisc.) (5:00 pm).
