Brandywine Knocks Off Beaver

MONACA, Pa. -- The Penn State Brandywine softball team posted a doubleheader sweep at Penn State Beaver on Sunday afternoon, winning by scores of 2-1 and 10-2.

Grace DeRosa (Glenside, Pa./Cheltenham) claimed her fourth victory of the season in game one after allowing just one run on four hits. She struck out seven during seven innings in the circle.

Brandywine received all the runs it would need in the third inning as Jen Patterson (Springfield, Pa./Springfield) and Arianna Segich (Ocean City, N.J./Ocean City) both singled to get the inning started. Maddie Malfara (Ardsley, Pa./Abington) then delivered a two-out single, scoring both base runners.

Beaver got one run back in the sixth inning when Vanessa Jackson doubled in Brenna Cepull, but Jackson was thrown out trying to stretch the hit into a triple and DeRosa would retire the final four batters in order to preserve the win.

The Lions had a much easier time in game two as they needed just five innings to dispatch of Beaver.

Katie DeStefano (Kennett Square, Pa./Kennett) gave Brandywine a 3-0 lead in the second with a three-run double and Steph Harvey (Berlin, N.J./Eastern Regional) pushed the lead to four with a sacrifice fly one frame later.

After Beaver cut its deficit in half, Brandywine answered by scoring five runs with two outs in the fourth. Robyn Gannon (Lansdowne, Pa./Archbishop Prendergast), Malfara and Harvey all delivered bases-loaded singles and two more runs would come around to score on a Beaver error.

Malfara collected four hits on the day, two in each game, while Gannon, Harvey and DeStefano each had two hits in game two and Ashlee Stritzinger (Wilmington, Del./Concord) produced a pair of base hits in the opener.

Olivia Encarnacion (Glenolden, Pa./Interboro) moved her record to 5-3 after fanning three and allowing just two unearned runs on four hits in five innings in the circle.

Brandywine (12-12, 7-1 PSUAC) continues its eight-game road trip with a non-conference doubleheader at Arcadia on Tuesday.
