Griffins Ride Offense To Sweep Of Lions

GWYNEDD VALLEY, Pa. -- Gwynedd Mercy plated 24 runs and posted a doubleheader sweep of Penn State Brandywine, winning by scores of 17-9 and 7-6 on Saturday afternoon.

GMU scored five times during the first inning of game one and pulled away with a nine-run third inning.

Brandywine cut a five-run deficit to just one with a four-run third. Robyn Gannon (Lansdowne, Pa./Archbishop Prendergast) stole home to score the first run and Steph Harvey (Berlin, N.J./Eastern Regional) knocked in a run with a single, while two more scores came across on a Griffin error.

Harvey added two more RBI in the fourth inning with a base hit and Arianna Segich (Ocean City, N.J./Ocean City) clubbed her first-career home run, a solo shot in the fifth, but Gwynedd received a home run and four RBI from Becki Christoffers and posted the run-rule victory.

Gannon went 3-for-4 at the plate, while Harvey and Maddie Malfara (Ardsley, Pa./Abington) both recorded two hits.

Brandywine trailed 3-0 through five innings of the nightcap, but exploded for six runs in the sixth to take the lead.

After the first three batters of the frame all worked walks, Gannon got the scoring starting, crossing home following a wild pitch. Julie Foeldes (Kendall Park, N.J./South Brunswick) drove home a run with a double and the Lions knotted the score at 3-3 when Harvey scored on another wild pitch. Segich delivered a two-run double that gave Brandywine the lead and scored the sixth run of the inning after a third wild pitch.

However, Gwynedd Mercy took advantage of a pair of Brandywine errors and strung together a pair of hits to plate three runs during the bottom of the sixth. The Griffins walked off with the win in the bottom of the seventh when Tara Matteo walked with two outs and came around to score on Kim Machelette's double.

Segich and Gannon both collected two hits to lead Brandywine at the plate. Grace DeRosa (Glenside, Pa./Cheltenham) struck out six in 6 2/3 innings, but allowed six earned runs and took the loss.

Brandywine (0-10) is at home for the first time this season on Wednesday against St. Joseph's (Vt.) at 3:00 pm.
