Lions Swept In Final Florida Games

CLERMONT, Fla. -- Penn State Brandywine got its offense going for the first time this week, but it was not enough as the Lions' softball team  dropped the final two games of Spring Break in Clermont, Fla., on Wednesday night. Brandywine was defeated 10-7 by Juniata and 11-3 by Wesley.

In the first game of the night against Juniata, Robyn Gannon (Lansdowne, Pa./Archibishop Prendergast) went 3-for-3 at the plate, while Ashlee Stritzinger (Wilmington, Del./Concord) added two hits as Brandywine collected nine base hits as a team.

Gannon's run-scoring double knotted the score at 1-1 during the bottom of the first inning. She later scored on a wild pitch and Stritzinger added an RBI single to give the Lions a 3-1 lead.

However, Juniata answered with a six-run second frame and tacked on two more scores in the fourth to claim a 9-3 lead.

Brandywine battled back in the fourth. Olivia Encarnacion (Glenolden, Pa./Interboro) led off with a walk and moved to second on Arianna Segich's (Ocean City, N.J./Ocean City) bunt single. Both runners came around to score on Gannon's double and Gannon would later cross home following a passed ball.

The Lions would get no closer as the Eagles added an insurance run in the seventh before Steph Harvey's (Berlin, N.J./Eastern Regional) pinch-hit, RBI double accounted for the final run in the bottom of the inning.

Brandywine fell behind 5-0 against Wesley before answering with a three-run  second inning. Katy Steffen (Downingtown, Pa./Downingtown West) and Grace DeRosa (Glenside, Pa./Cheltenham) both recorded RBI singles and Steffen came around to score on a wild pitch.

Those would be all the runs Brandywine could muster however, as Wesley padded its lead with a single run in the third and five more in the fifth to end the game after five innings.

Julia Allman (Broomall, Pa./Marple Newtown) collected two hits and walked once in three at-bats, while Katie DeStefano (Kennett Square, Pa./Kennett) struck out five in a losing cause.

Brandywine (0-8) returns to action on Saturday, March 19 at Gwynedd Mercy (12:00 pm).
