Brandywine Powers To Sweep Of Mont Alto

MEDIA, Pennsylvania -- Penn State Brandywine edged Penn State Mont Alto 2-1 in game one and, aided by three home runs, rolled to a 14-6 victory in game two, completing a doubleheader sweep during the Lions' league openers on Sunday afternoon.

Brandywine recieved all the runs it would need during the bottom of the second inning during the opener. After the Lions' first two batters both reached base via Mont Alto errors, Ashlee Stritzinger (Wilmington, Del./Concord) roped a two-run single to center field, giving Brandywine a 2-0 lead.

Brandywine pitcher Grace DeRosa (Glenside, Pa./Cheltenham) made the two-run lead stand up by winning her third-straight decision. DeRosa struck out the first four batters she faced and six overall during seven innings of work. She set down the side in order three times, while allowing just three hits.

Cassidy Feaser took the loss for Mont Alto despite giving up just two runs on three hits in 4 1/3 innings.

Brandywine got its bats going during game two, collecting 15 hits, eight of which went for extra bases.

The Lions plated five runs during the first inning with the final two coming on back-to-back solo home runs from Stritzinger and Julie Foeldes (Kendall Park, N.J./South Brunswick).

Arianna Segich (Ocean City, N.J./Ocean City) led off the second frame with a home run and then tripled in a pair in the third inning, upping Brandywine's lead to 8-0.

Mont Alto crept to within three in the fifth, but Segich tripled in DeRosa during the bottom of the inning for an insurance run and the Lions put away Mont Alto with three runs in the sixth. DeRosa plated a pair with a double and came around to score on Katy Steffen's (Downingtown, Pa./Downingtown West) base hit.

Segich went 4-for-4 with four RBI and three runs scored in game two, while Robyn Gannon (Lansdowne, Pa./Archbishop Prendergast), Stritzinger and DeRosa all recorded three hits. Stritzinger and DeRosa both scored three times and Gannon crossed home twice.

Katie DeStefano (Kennett Square, Pa./Kennett) picked up her first victory of the year after striking out three and allowing six runs in five innings. Olivia Encarnacion (Glenolden, Pa./Interboro) pitched a scoreless sixth inning.

Brandywine (5-11, 2-0 PSUAC) travels to Rosemont on Tuesday for a nonconference doubleheader starting at 5:00 pm.
