Wilkes Knocks Off Brandywine 5-2

ASTON, Pennsylvania -- Wilkes University claimed a 5-2, non-conference baseball victory over Penn State Brandywine on Wednesday afternoon at Maple Zone.

The Colonels (7-4) scored four times in the third inning to take the lead and three Wilkes pitchers combined to retire the final 21 batters they faced. Johnny Jan went the first six innings to earn the win, while Matt Kaster and Pat Condo combined to fan five over the final three innings. Condo picked up his third save.

Brandywine (2-8) took a 1-0, first inning lead as Dan McMenamin (Springfield, Pa./Springfield) reached on an error and came around to score following Steve Trainor's (Broomall, Pa./Cardinal O'Hara) sacrifice fly.

After the Colonels scored four runs despite collecting just one hit in the third, McMenamin led off Brandywine's half of the frame with a base hit and Pat Tackney (Broomall, Pa./Marple Newtown) followed with a double. A groundout from Tom Osenbach (Newtown Square, Pa./West Chester Christian) plated McMenamin; however, Jan worked out of further trouble and Brandywine would be held off the base paths the remainder of the way.

Brandywine mustered just four hits, while Wilkes collected only five off two Brandywine pitchers. Bradley Ulmer (Newark, Del./St. George's Tech) took the loss after allowing five runs (three earned) on three hits in 3 2/3 innings on the hill. Troy Mucchetti (Haverford, Pa./Haverford) tossed 5 1/3 scoreless innings to close out the game, striking out five, while surrendering just two hits.

Brandywine is back at Maple Zone Saturday for a doubleheader with Central Penn beginning at 2:00 pm.
