Lions Take Two From Central Penn

ASTON, Pennsylvania -- Penn State Brandywine swept a baseball doubleheader from Central Penn on Saturday afternoon, walking off with a 5-4 victory in game one and posting a 10-0 rout of the Knights in a five-inning game two.

After Central Penn opened the first game with a run in the top of the first, Brandywine quickly knotted the score as Pat Tackney (Broomall, Pa./Marple Newtown) singled, stole second, and scored on Tom Osenbach's (Newtown Square, Pa./West Chester Christian) base hit.

The Knights added two more runs in the fourth and scored once in the fifth to build a 4-2 lead. The Lions again tied the game in the bottom of the sixth, scoring on sacrifice flies from Osenbach and Steve Trainor (Broomall, Pa./Cardinal O'Hara).

Dave DiMeglio (Morton, Pa./Ridley) singled with one out in the seventh to start Brandywine's final rally. He crossed home after Kevin Dougherty (West Chester, Pa./Rustin) singled and the ball was mishandled by a Knight outfielder, allowing DiMeglio to score the winning run.

Tackney collected two hits and scored twice, while Osenbach and Trainor each knocked in two runs. Tyler Michaels (Aston, Pa./Sun Valley) picked up the win in relief of Matt Gallo (Springfield, Pa./Springfield) after tossing the final 3 2/3 innings. He struck out five and allowed one run, while Gallo fanned a pair and surrendered three runs in 3 1/3 innings.

Brandywine jumped on Central Penn early in game two, building a six-run lead through three innings. Osenbach got the scoring started with a first-inning, RBI single. John Gorgone's (Ridley, Pa./Ridley) two-run triple in the second upped Brandywine's lead to 3-0 and Gorgone would later score on a groundout to tack on a fourth run.

Osenbach's second run-scoring single followed a Tackey triple in the third. He came around to score two batters later following a Tommy Crumlish (Upper Darby, Pa./Monsignor Bonner) sacrifice fly.

Crumlish and Matt Masi (West Chester, Pa./Cardinal O'Hara) both knocked in runs with doubles in the fifth and Gorgone added a run-scoring single as Brandywine pulled away, scoring four more times.

Osenbach went 3-for-3 with two RBI and two runs scored in game two, while Tackney scored twice and Crumlish and Gorgone both posted two hits and three RBI.

Right-hander Frank Newman (Ridley, Pa./Cardinal O'Hara) fired a two-hit shutout, the first of his career. He struck out two over five innings of work.

Brandywine (4-8) hosts Cairn on Tuesday afternoon at 2:00 pm at Maple Zone.
