Cassario’s One-Hitter Highlights Lions’ Split In Florida

CLERMONT, Pa. – Crystal Cassario (Levittown, Pa./Pennsbury) twirled a one-hit shutout in game two as the Penn State Brandywine softball team opened Spring Break with a doubleheader split on Saturday afternoon. Cassario blanked Delaware Valley in a 2-0 victory, while the Lions dropped their opener to Mount Union, 7-0.

Game Two: Penn State Brandywine 2, Delaware Valley 0

Cassario retired the first eight batters she faced and brought a no-hitter into the sixth inning. A one-out double broke up her no-hit bid.

Cassario struck out eight batters and threw 59 of her 86 pitches for strikes to earn her first win in a Brandywine uniform. She allowed just three base runners in 7.0 innings via one hit and two walks.

Jess James (Yardley, Pa./Pennsbury), Gianna Casale (Hamilton, N.J./Steinert) and Gianna Terpolilli (Hammonton, N.J./Our Lady of Mercy Academy) provided hits for the Brandywine offense.

James' one-out single in the fourth inning jumpstarted the offense. She stole second and third base and came around to score when Casale doubled into the right-center field gap.

Brandywine added an insurance run one inning later when Karly Rees (Oxford, Pa./Oxford) walked and came around to score on Destiny Brophy's (Bristol, Pa./Bristol) groundout three batters later.

Game One: Mount Union 7, Penn State Brandywine 0

The Purple Raiders scored runs in each of their first four at-bats by tallying 10 hits and taking advantage of three Brandywine errors to build a 7-0 lead through four innings.

Brandywine put a runner on base in each of the first six innings, but was unable to push a runner across home against a pair of Mount Union pitchers.

Brophy tallied two of Brandywine's four hits, while Terpolilli singled and stole a base to pace the Lions' offensively.

Brandywine (2-1) gets an early start Sunday with games against Thomas (9:15 AM) and D'Youville (11:30 AM).
