Brandywine Falls In Road Doubleheader

CHESTER, Pa. – The Penn State Brandywine softball team dropped a pair of closely-contested games during its first road matchup of the season Saturday afternoon at Widener. The Pride topped the Lions 2-0 in game one and walked off with a 6-5, extra-inning victory in game two.

Game One: Widener 2, Penn State Brandywine 0

Brandywine's five-game winning streak came to a close in the opener as the Pride claimed a 2-0 victory.

Crystal Cassario (Levittown, Pa./Pennsbury) suffered her first loss of the season against five victories after allowing two runs on five hits. Cassario recorded her fifth complete game of the spring, tallying one strikeout in six innings.

Kaylin Johnson's two-run, fifth-inning double accounted for all of the scoring in game one. Liz Renavitz struck out nine in seven innings to earn the victory for Widener.

Brandywine threatened during the final inning as Cassario worked a one-out walk and Destiny Brophy (Bristol, Pa./Bristol) followed with a base hit, but Renavitz struck out the next two batters to end the rally.

In addition to Brophy's knock, Karly Rees (Oxford, Pa./Oxford) and Payton Landis (Coatesville, Pa./Coatesville) also tallied singles.

Game Two: Widener 6, Penn State Branywine 5 (8 innings)

Brandywine overcame a three-run deficit to take a brief lead, but the Pride tied the game in the fifth inning before winning three frames later.

Trailing 3-0, Meghan Ferry (Gloucester City, N.J./Gloucester City) got the offense going with her third home run in the last four games, a solo shot, to lead off the fourth inning.

Widener added its fourth run during the bottom of the fourth, but Brandywine responded with a four-run fifth inning. Sam Bagosy (Washington Twp., N.J./Washington Twp.) and Lianna DeDios (Elmwood Park, N.J./Memorial) singled to open the frame and both came around to score on Jess James' (Yardley, Pa./Pennsbury) base hit. After Gianna Terpolilli (Hammonton, N.J./Our Lady of Mercy Academy) reached via error and Ferry walked, Rees drilled a two-run single to put the Lions in front.

Becca Tiley's RBI single tied the count at 5-5 in the bottom of the fifth and after a scoreless sixth and seventh frames, the game would need an extra inning to be decided.

Brandywine went down in order in its half of the eighth. Widener's Mikayla Fedele walked the Pride off with a victory by lifting a sacrifice fly to right field, giving Widener a 6-5 triumph.

Bagosy and Landis both posted two hits, while James drove in two runs and stole a base. Rebecca Halford (Garnet Valley, Pa./Garnet Valley) pitched all 7.1 innings, striking out two, but took the loss.

Brandywine (10-4) is back on the road Tuesday at Haverford (3:00 PM).
