Brandywine Takes Two From Central Maine

ASTON, Pa. – Penn State Brandywine eased to a 15-1 victory in the opener and produced a late rally to claim the nightcap 4-3 as the Lions' softball team swept Central Maine on Monday afternoon.

Game One: Penn State Brandywine 15, Central Maine 1

Crystal Cassario (Levittown, Pa./Pennsbury) tossed her second one-hitter in two weeks as she improved to 4-0 in the circle. She yielded one earned run on one hit in 5.0 innings of work, while striking out 11 Mustangs. Cassario's 11 strikeouts are the fifth double-figure strikeout total in team history and the most by a Brandywine pitcher since Grace DeRosa fanned 11 batters in 2017.

Brandywine struck for three first inning runs as Gianna Terpolilli (Hammonton, N.J./Our Lady of Mercy Academy) started the frame with a double and scored on Meghan Ferry's (Gloucester City, N.J./Gloucester City) triple. Cassario followed with a RBI single and later scored via wild pitch.

The Lions put the game away by plating eight runs in the third inning. Jess James (Yardley, Pa./Pennsbury), Lianna DeDios (Elmwood Park, N.J./Memorial) and Sarah Moore (New Holland, Pa./Pequea Valley) all recorded run-scoring singles before Terpolilli tripled in Moore and scored on a wild pitch.

Sam Bagosy's (Washington Twp., Pa./Washington Twp.) two-run single and Farrell Everett's (Wynnewood, Pa./Haverford) two-run double capped the scoring for the Lions in the fourth inning.

Terpolilli recorded three hits in three at-bats and scored twice, while Cassario and James each produced two hits, two runs and one RBI. Ferry added two hits and a run scored.

Game Two: Penn State Brandywine 4, Central Maine 3

Brandywine needed to plate three runs in the bottom of the sixth inning to rally past the Mustangs and complete the sweep.

The Lions led 1-0 after Moore tripled and scored on a passed ball in the second, but Central Maine took advantage of three errors to score three unearned runs in the fifth.

James started the sixth-inning rally with a base hit and after DeDios was hit by a pitch, Everett delivered a one-out single that scored James. Three batters later, the Lions took the lead as Alexia Galli (Glenolden, Pa./Cardinal O'Hara) drilled a two-out single through the left side, pushing two more runs across.

Rebecca Halford (Garnet Valley, Pa./Garnet Valley) worked out of a two-on, two-out jam in the seventh by getting Avery Herrick to ground out to third base for the final out. Halford improved to 3-2 in the circle after striking out seven and allowing three unearned runs on seven hits. She fired her third complete game in four starts.

Five different players recorded a hit for the Lions in game two, with Moore's triple being the lone extra-base knock, while James registered her PSUAC-leading sixth stolen base.

Brandywine (8-2) and Central Maine meet again Tuesday for another doubleheader at Maple Zone beginning at 3:00 PM.
