High-Scoring Trio Leads Brandywine To Victory

SHARON, Pa. – Amanda Floyd (Glenolden, Pa./Interboro), Kiara Koger (Philadelphia, Pa./Neumann-Goretti) and Trinell Watson (Pottstown, Pa./Pottstown) combined for 63 points as the Penn State Brandywine women's basketball team defeated Penn State Shenango 81-76 on Sunday afternoon.

Floyd netted a new career high with 31 points after tallying the second 30-point game of her career. Floyd knocked down five three-pointers and added five rebounds, four steals and three blocks shots, while playing all 40 minutes. Koger finished one point shy of a career best with 18 points. She also notched five rebounds, five assists and three steals, while Watson produced the first double-double of her career, coupling 14 points and 12 rebounds with five steals.

Shenango buried seven three-pointers during the opening 10 minutes, but Floyd helped the Lions keep pace by canning four triples of her own as the hosts held a one-point edge after one quarter.

Koger's triple early in the second put Brandywine on top briefly; however, Shenango answered with 14-straight points to build a 43-31 edge. A layup from Koger ended the Lions' scoring drought and began a 13-0 surge over the next four minutes that erased Brandywine's 12-point deficit. Watson netted six of the final seven points during the run, including a bucket that put Brandywine back in front with 32 seconds to go, but Alli Lewis' layup just before the buzzer sent the hosts into halftime with a 45-44 advantage.

Shenango attempted to pull away from the Lions again in the third quarter, building a nine-point lead with 2:30 remaining; however, Floyd and Watson combined for eight consecutive points and Brandywine trailed by just three entering the final period.

The hosts held a 69-65 edge with 7:30 to go, but Brandywine held Shenango scoreless for the next 3:25 and took advantage by vaulting into the lead when Koger sank a triple at the 7:08 mark. Anaiyah Allen (Lutz, Fla./Steinbrenner) added a basket to push the Lions' lead to three points before Lewis brought Shenango back within one by netting a basket during the hosts' next possession.

Brandywine continued to hold a one-point advantage with less than one minute to play, but Floyd buried her fifth triple of the game to extend the margin to four points with 56 seconds on the clock.

Two free throws from Koger and one from Watson during the final 43 seconds helped the Lions salt the game away from the free throw line.

Allen tallied eight points, six assists and three steals, while Kaitlyn Johnson (Clifton Heights, Pa./Upper Darby) registered eight first-half points.

Brandywine forced 25 turnovers, while holding Shenango to 34 percent shooting. Shenango was limited to 3-for-13 shooting from beyond the arc in the second half after canning nine first-half triples.

Brandywine (7-8, 6-3 PSUAC) plays on its home floor for the first time in 2023 on Wednesday when the Lions host Penn State Hazleton at 6:00 PM.
