Floyd’s 33 Points Not Enough In 74-72 Setback

SCHUYLKILL HAVEN, Pa. – For the second time in five days, Amanda Floyd (Glenolden, Pa./Interboro) set a career-high point total, this time scoring 33 points, but it was not enough as the Penn State Brandywine women's basketball team was defeated 74-72 by Penn State Schuylkill on Friday night.

Floyd, who poured in 31 points Sunday at Penn State Shenango, made 12 of 22 shots, including four three-pointers, and added four rebounds and four steals.

The Lions fell behind 22-9 after one quarter, but battled back to within five by halftime led by 14 second-quarter points from Floyd.

Brandywine trimmed its deficit as low as two points on three occasions during the third period, but each time Schuylkill had an answer and the hosts led 53-50 through 30 minutes.

Schuylkill led by seven points with six minutes to go; however five-straight points from Floyd followed by a three-point play from Trinell Watson (Pottstown, Pa./Pottstown) put the Lions on top less than 90 seconds later.

Schuylkill's Tajae Stevenson answered with two free throws as the hosts retook the lead during their next possession. Brandywine fought back to tie the score twice over the next three minutes, but Stevenson buried a jumper to make the count 71-68 with 47 seconds to play. After a Brandywine turnover, two Schuylkill free throws extended the margin to five points.

A Floyd free throw and triple from Kaitlyn Johnson (Clifton Heights, Pa./Upper Darby) during the final 15 seconds brought the Lions within one, but Stevenson sank a free throw with less than one second to play and Brandywine's comeback bid ran out of time.

Watson notched 12 points, five rebounds and three assists, while Kiara Koger (Philadelphia, Pa./Neumann-Goretti) added 11 points, eight rebounds, four assists and three steals.

Brandywine (8-9, 7-4 PSUAC) is back at home Wednesday when the Lions host Penn State Lehigh Valley on Threes for THON Night at 6:00 PM.
