Brandywine Can’t Overcome Early Deficit; Drops Third-Straight

MEDIA, Pa. -- Penn State Brandywine faced a 31-point, first-half deficit that it could not overcome as the Lions' women's basketball team was downed by Penn State Schuylkill by a score of 76-64 on Tuesday night.

Schuylkill held a 41-10 edge with 2:26 to go in the second quarter and after limiting Brandywine to four first-half field goals, owned a 43-16 edge at the break.

Cheyenne Rivas (Thorndale, Pa./Collegium Charter) helped Brandywine fight back into the game during the second half, scoring all of her career-high 17 points during the final 20 minutes on 7-of-8 shooting.

Rivas' triple with 1:34 on the clock in the third quarter started a run of nine consecutive points to end the stanza as Brandywine pulled within 59-42.

A triple from Rivas brought the deficit to 15 points with 2:51 remaining in regulation. Thirty-seven seconds later, Katelyn Johnson (Clifton Heights, Pa./Upper Darby) converted a three-point play that made the count 74-62, but Brandywine could not get any closer during the final minutes.

In addition to Rivas' 17 points, Amanda Floyd (Glenolden, Pa./Interboro) and Kiara Koger (Philadelphia, Pa./Neumann-Goretti) recorded double-figure point totals. Floyd produced a 14-point, 10-steal double-double, while Koger knocked down 11-of-12 free throws and notched 13 points along with nine boards and five assists.

Brandywine forced 28 Schuylkill turnovers, but the visitors held commanding 59-35 edge on the boards and limited Brandywine to 26 percent shooting from the field.

Brandywine (10-12, 9-7 PSUAC) hosts Penn State Mont Alto for Senior Night on Friday beginning at 6:00 PM.
