Lewandowski’s Shutout Highlights Brandywine’s Final Day In Florida

WINTER HAVEN, Fla. – April Lewandowski (Atco, N.J./Hammonton) threw a five-hit shutout in game one to highlight the Penn State Brandywine softball team's final day at The Spring Games as the Lions blanked Wheaton (Ill.) 6-0. Brandywine dropped its final game of the day, falling 4-3 against Bluffton College.

Game One: Penn State Brandywine 6, Wheaton 0

Lewandowski twirled the shutout in the opener as she limited Wheaton to just five hits, all singles, while striking out one. In seven innings of work, only two baserunners reached second base against Lewandowski and both were erased by double plays turned by the Brandywine defense.

Kaylee Mushinski (Allentown, N.J./Allentown) had a big day at the plate, recording three of Brandywine's seven hits and driving in five runs. Lexi Bussenger (Bangor, Pa./Bangor) reached base safely three times via two walks and a single and scored a pair of runs.

Lewandowski helped her own cause with a run-scoring groundout that plated Emily Reagan (Harrisburg, Pa./Bishop McDevitt) for the game's opening run in the first inning.

One frame later, Mushinski drove in Reagan and Destiny Brophy (Bristol, Pa./Bristol) with a single to center field. She later added a two-run double in the fourth and a RBI single in the sixth.

Game Two: Bluffton 4, Penn State Brandywine 3

Brandywine held a 3-2 lead entering the final inning, but an error and a two-run home run helped give Bluffton the one-run victory.

The Lions plated a first inning run when Meghan Ferry (Gloucester City, N.J./Gloucester City) scored following a Bluffton error.

Bluffton knotted the score at 1-1 in the fourth, but Mushinski lifted a sacrifice fly that scored Reagan with the go-ahead run during the bottom of the frame. Later in the inning, Brandywine upped the lead to 3-1 when Ferry scored on Payton Landis' (Coatesville, Pa./Coatesville) groundout.

The Beavers drew closer with an unearned run in the sixth before taking the lead in the seventh.

Brandywine recorded six hits, including doubles by Ferry and Farrell Everett (Wynnewood, Pa./Haverford), while Mushinski extended her hitting streak to eight games with a first inning single.

Sarah Moore (New Holland, Pa./Pequea Valley) went the distance in the circle, recording five strikeouts, while allowing just one earned run on nine hits.

Brandywine (5-3) hosts Cedar Crest Wednesday for its home opener at 3:00 PM.
