Brandywine Opens PSUAC Play With Sweep

ASTON, Pa. – Penn State Brandywine's offense produced 23 hits and 23 runs during a conference-opening doubleheader sweep of Penn State Hazleton on Tuesday. The Lions won game one 9-0 and claimed game two 14-3.

Game One: Penn State Brandywine 9, Penn State Hazleton 0

Brandywine scored nine runs on nine hits in just four at-bats to run away with game one.

The Lions struck for three runs in the first inning before putting the game away with a five-run third frame.

Meghan Ferry (Gloucester City, N.J./Gloucester City) walked with one out and scored the game's first run when Payton Landis (Coatesville, Pa./Coatesville) singled through the middle. Karly Rees (Oxford, Pa./Oxford) added an RBI base hit before Crystal Cassario (Levittown, Pa./Pennsbury) laced a double off the right-center field wall, scoring Rees.

Rees tallied another run-scoring single in the third, while Ferry crossed home via wild pitch. Jess James (Yardley, Pa./Pennsbury) tacked on two more runs with a single and later scored following a Hazleton error.

Another Hazleton miscue allowed Landis to score the ninth and final run during the bottom of the fourth inning.

Landis and Rees both collected two hits and two runs scored, while Rees was one of three players with two RBI, joining James and Cassario.

Cassario also earned the win in the circle, her third of the year. She carried a no-hitter into the fourth inning before settling for a two-hit shutout. Cassario struck out four and did not walk a batter.

Game Two: Penn State Brandywine 14, Penn State Hazleton 3

Brandywine's offense stayed hot in game two as the Lions pounded out 14 more hits, including six that went for extra bases.

Lexi Bussenger (Bangor, Pa./Bangor) started a five-run second inning with a bases-loaded single that plated Rees. Landis recorded an RBI double, while Ferry forced in a run by working a bases-loaded walk and Gianna Casale (Hamilton, N.J./Steinert) and Kaylee Mushinski (Allentown, N.J./Allentown) both recorded sacrifice flies.

Brandywine added five more runs in the third to double the margin to 10-0. Bussenger and James executed a double steal with James crossing home. Casale scored Bussenger with a single, while Emily Reagan (Harrisburg, Pa./Bishop McDevitt) and Mushinski each doubled in a run. Landis capped the frame by lining a single to left field that scored Mushinski.

Casale and Cassario both added a run-scoring double and Naya Rivera (Mays Landing, N.J./Oakcrest) drove in a pair with a single to finish off the scoring in the fourth inning.

Casale went 2-for-2 at the plate with three RBI and two runs scored, while Bussenger produced two hits, crossed home three times and stole a base. Landis and Reagan also registered two-hit efforts.

Fourteen runs was more than enough for April Lewandowski (Atco, N.J./Hammonton), who cruised to her fifth win of the season. She limited Hazleton to three runs on four hits over five innings of work.

Branddywine (11-3, 2-0 PSUAC) returns to Maple Zone on Thursday for a non-conference doubleheader against Delaware Valley beginning at 3:00 PM.
