Brandywine Rolls Through Albright In Sweep

READING, Pa. – Penn State Brandywine received a pair of dominant pitching performances and put a combined 23 runs on the board during a pair of run-rule victories over Albright on Tuesday afternoon. Brandywine won the opener 12-1 in six innings, while claiming an 11-0, five-inning triumph in the nightcap.

Game One: Penn State Brandywine 12, Albright 1

Brandywine led wire-to-wire in game one, scoring 12 times on 13 hits.

Lexi Bussenger (Bangor, Pa./Bangor) and Kaylee Mushinski (Allentown, N.J./Allentown) paced the offense with three hits each, while Jess James (Yardley, Pa./Pennsbury) and Payton Landis (Coatesville, Pa./Coatesville) both collected two knocks. Bussenger stole four bases and Brandywine swiped nine overall, while Mushinski drove in five runs in a game for the second time this year.

Maddie DeFazio (Fairless Hills, Pa./Pennsbury) surrendered an unearned run during the first inning, but limited Albright to just four hits the rest of the way to earn her seventh victory of the spring. DeFazio struck out two and did not allow an earned run for the fifth time in eight appearances.

Bussenger started a two-run first by singling and stealing a base before scoring on an Albright error. Two batters later, Mushinski's double drove in Meghan Ferry (Gloucester City, N.J./Gloucester City) for a 2-0 Brandywine lead.

Lianna DeDios (Elmwood Park, N.J./Elmwood Park Memorial) added a run-scoring single in the second before the Lions busted the game open by pushing four runs across in the fourth inning. James singled in DeDios and later scored on Ferry's sacrifice fly. Mushinski and Landis followed with back-to-back, run-scoring singles.

Brandywine tacked on five more runs to its total in the sixth as April Lewandowski (Atco, N.J./Hammonton) and Karly Rees (Oxford, Pa./Oxford) provided RBI doubles and Mushinski blasted her second home run of the year, a three-run shot, over the left-center field fence.

Game Two: Penn State Brandywine 11, Albright 0

Brandywine eased to another victory in game two, winning 11-0.

Sarah Moore (New Holland, Pa./Pequea Valley) carried a no-hitter into the fifth inning before it was broken up by a two-out single. Moore retired the next batter via ground ball to finish off a complete-game shutout, earning her first victory of the season.

Farrell Everett (Wynnewood, Pa./Haverford) and Destiny Brophy (Bristol, Pa./Bristol) both delivered three hits. Everett collected four RBI and scored twice, while Brophy drove in three. Bussenger, Landis, Lewandowski also came around to score twice.

Bussenger scored thanks to an Albright error to give the Lions a 1-0 lead through one inning. Brandywine plated five runs during both the third and fourth innings to run away with the victory.

Landis and Brophy drove in runs with base hits, while Everett cleared the bases with a three-run double in the third. Brophy and Lewandowski both provided two-run doubles in the fourth and Everett tacked on an RBI single.
