Brandywine, Delaware Valley Split Non-Conference Doubleheader

ASTON, Pa. – Delaware Valley University rallied to defeat Penn State Brandywine 5-2 in game one, but the Lions bounced back to down the Aggies 8-3 in game two of a non-conference softball doubleheader on Thursday afternoon.

Game One: Delaware Valley 5, Penn State Brandywine 2

Sarah Moore (New Holland, Pa./Pequea Valley) cruised through the first six innings, but DelVal struck for five runs in the seventh to claim game one.

The Aggies plated five runs on five hits, while sending 10 batters to the plate in the seventh inning.

Brandywine owned a 2-0 lead through six after scoring single runs in the second and fifth frames.

The Lions scored without the benefit of a hit in the second. Two walks and a hit batter loaded the bases for Emily Reagan (Harrisburg, Pa./Bishop McDevitt), who worked base on balls to push Jess James (Yardley, Pa./Pennsbury) across the plate.

A leadoff walk to Kaylee Mushinski (Allentown, N.J./Allentown) in the fifth led to Brandywine's second run. Mushinski moved to second via Payton Landis' (Coatesville, Pa./Coatesville) sacrifice bunt and scored on a base hit from Karly Rees (Oxford, Pa./Oxford).

Brandywine was limited to four hits: singles from Rees, Landis and Mushinski and a double by Crystal Cassario (Levittown, Pa./Pennsbury). Moore yielded four runs on seven hits, while striking out two over 6.2 innings.

Game Two: Penn State Brandywine 8, Delaware Valley 3

The teams were deadlocked 3-3 through four innings, but Brandywine plated the game's final five runs to earn the split.

Landis recorded a run-scoring single and Mushinski crossed home via error for a 2-0 Brandywine lead through one inning. DelVal scored a second inning run, but Lexi Bussenger (Bangor, Pa./Bangor) got that run back in the bottom of the second by speeding home following a wild pitch.

After the Aggies rallied to tie the count at 3-3, the Lions took the lead for good during the bottom of the fifth. Consecutive singles by Landis, Cassario and James to start the frame loaded the bases and Naya Rivera's (Mays Landing, N.J./Oakcrest) groundout was enough to score Landis with the go-ahead run.

Brandywine put the game away after tacking on four more runs one inning later. Rees started the inning with a double and came around to score on Mushinski's two-base hit. After a walk to Landis, Cassario put the game out of reach by driving a three-run home run over the center field fence.

Cassario posted three hits in four at-bats, while Landis tallied two hits and two runs scored and Mushinski crossed home twice.

Maddie DeFazio (Fairless Hills, Pa./Pennsbury) went the distance to up her record to 4-0 this spring. DeFazio tallied four strikeouts, while allowing three runs on seven hits.

Brandywine (12-4, 2-0 PSUAC) is back in action Friday afternoon against Penn State Mont Alto beginning at 3:00 PM at Maple Zone.
