Cassario Spins No-Hitter; Brandywine Wins Two

ASTON, Pa. – Crystal Cassario (Levittown, Pa./Pennsbury) fired Penn State Brandywine's first no-hitter in two years during game one of a doubleheader sweep of Penn State DuBois on Monday afternoon. Cassario's no-no highlighted a 6-0 triumph in the opener, while the Lions edged DuBois 7-5 in game two.

Game One: Penn State Brandywine 6, Penn State DuBois 0

Cassario twirled the 11th no-hitter in Brandywine history and the first to go all seven innings to lead the Lions in game one.

Cassario stopped the potent DuBois offense by throwing 57 of her 94 pitches for strikes and fanning six batters. She carried a perfect game into the sixth inning before a leadoff walk broke up her bid. Cassario worked around a pair of sixth innings walks, her lone blemishes of the game, by getting a pair of groundouts and a strikeout of Madison Siterak.

Cassario received some help from her defense as well as Gianna Casale (Hamilton, N.J./Steinert) made a running catch up against the left field fence to end the fourth and Jess James (Yardley, Pa./Pennsbury) stabbed a liner at third base to open the fifth inning.

Four players accounted for eight of Brandywine's nine hits at the plate as Kaylee Mushinski (Allentown, N.J./Allentown), Payton Landis (Coatesville, Pa./Coatesville), Karly Rees (Oxford, Pa./Oxford) and Lianna DeDios (Elmwood Park, N.J./Elmwood Park Memorial) all collected two knocks.

Mushinski gave the Lions a 2-0 lead in the third with a two-run triple before three more runners came around to score in the fourth. DeDios tripled in Cassario before crossing home when Casale set down a squeeze bunt, while James drove in Rees with a groundout. Mushinski doubled and scored on Landis' single to cap the scoring in the sixth.

Game Two: Penn State Brandywine 7, Penn State DuBois 5

Brandywine earned the sweep by holding off a late DuBois rally to win 7-5.

The Lions jumped on top early with a first inning run as Emily Reagan (Harrisburg, Pa./Bishop McDevitt) led off with a double and came around to score on a two-base hit from Mushinski two batters later.

Destiny Brophy (Bristol, Pa./Bristol) upped the lead to 3-0 one frame later by driving in DeDios and James with a double.

After DuBois got two runs back in the fourth, Brandywine answered with four during the bottom of the inning. James led off with a walk, moved to second following DeDios' single and scored on a wild pitch. Reagan's double scored DeDios, while Brophy crossed home on Meghan Ferry's (Gloucester City, N.J./Gloucester City) groundout and Mushinski lined a sacrifice fly to center that allowed Reagan to come home.

DuBois rallied in the seventh, scoring three runs on four hits, but Maddie DeFazio (Fairless Hills, Pa./Pennsbury) got Kelsey Stuart to ground out to end the game. DeFazio earned her team-high sixth victory of the season after recording three strikeouts and allowing five runs in six innings of work.

Reagan produced a pair of doubles and three of Brandywine's seven hits overall, while Dedios and James both scored two runs.

Brandywine (15-5, 5-1 PSUAC) heads to Pittsburgh for four games beginning Friday at Penn State Greater Allegheny (5:00 PM).
