Brandywine Rolls To Home-Opening Win

MEDIA, Pa. -- Playing in front of its home fans for the first time in nearly two years, the Penn State Brandywine men's soccer team scored four times during the second half to run away with a 6-0 victory over the University of Valley Forge on Wednesday afternoon.

Joey Cairy (Aston, Pa./Sun Valley) provided two goals and an assist, while Christian Zavala (Kennett Square, Pa./Kennett) and Tyler Skaer (Brookhaven, Pa./The Christian Academy) both tallied a goal and an assist. Connor Lines (Philadelphia, Pa./Franklin Towne Charter) added a pair of helpers.

Cairy, Zavala and Lines combined to net the game's opening goal during the fourth minute as Cairy tapped in Zavala's pass after a cross from Lines. The same trio doubled the margin during the 16th minute after Zavala collected his first goal of the year off feeds from Cairy and Lines.

Sixteen minutes into the second half, Brandywine struck for a third goal when Ethan Harper (Douglassville, Pa./Daniel Boone) scored after collecting a lead pass from Jeff Kuser (Reading, Pa./Wilson).

Brandywine added three more goals during the next 14 minutes. Alex Sydor (White Plains, N.Y./Ardsley) made the count 4-0 at the 68:46 mark, Cairy tallied his second score 2:30 later and Skaer capped off the scoring in the 76th minute.

John Simpson (Philadelphia, Pa./Franklin Towne Charter) and Elijah DeBooth (West Lawn, Pa./Wilson) combined for their second shutout of the fall. Simpson stopped two shots during the opening half, while DeBooth blocked one shot during the final 45 minutes.

Brandywine (2-1-1), which outshot Valley Forge 31-8, returns home Saturday for the opening game of the Bill Denney Memorial Tournament against Carlow at 12:00 pm.
