Big Second Half Lifts Brandywine In Bill Denney Memorial Tournament

MEDIA, Pa. – Penn State Brandywine scored four times during the second half to pull away from Carlow and hand the Celtics a 5-1 defeat Saturday afternoon in the first game of the Bill Denney Memorial Men's Soccer Tournament.

Brandywine fell behind 1-0 before finding the equalizer during the 40th minute on its 11th shot of the first half. Nick Gaither (Boerne, Texas/Samuel V. Champion) tapped in a cross from Tyler Skaer (Brookhaven, Pa./The Christian Academy) to make the count 1-1.

The Lions scored twice during the opening five minutes of the final period, taking the lead for good. Axel Ayllon-Ortiz (Kennett Square, Pa./Kennett) netted the go-ahead tally and Joey Cairy (Aston, Pa./Sun Valley), after assisting on Ayllon-Ortiz's tally, made it a two-score game two minutes later.

Skaer and Christian Zavala (Kennett Square, Pa./Kennett) added the final two goals during the 61st and 62nd minute, respectively.

Elijah DeBooth (West Lawn, Pa./Wilson) stopped one shot during the second half to earn the win in goal, while John Simpson (Philadelphia, Pa./Franklin Towne Charter) made one stop during the opening period.

Brandywine held a 23-5 edge in shots and put 12 attempts on target.

Brandywine (3-1-1) will play Bryant & Stratton-Albany in the championship match of the Bill Denney Memorial Tournament Sunday at 2:00 pm.
