Brandywine Secures Top Seed In PSUAC Tournament With 11-0 Triumph

NEW KENSINGTON, Pa. -- In a battle of the top two teams in Penn State University Athletic Conference men's soccer entering the weekend, Penn State Brandywine left no doubt which team would earn the top seed in next week's conference tournament as the Lions posted a lopsided, 11-0 victory at Penn State New Kensington on Saturday afternoon.

Brandywine, which ran its conference unbeaten streak to 63 consecutive matches (61-0-2), has earned a bye to the semifinal round and will host that PSUAC Tournament match next Saturday against the tournament's lowest remaining seed. New Kensington will be seeded third when the PSUAC Tournament begins with Wednesday's quarterfinals.

Joey Cairy (Aston, Pa./Sun Valley) and Christian Zavala (Kennett Square, Pa./Kennett) combined to net the first five goals of the day for the Lions.

Cairy scored at the 6:38 mark to give Brandywine a 1-0 edge and added his second score of the day 14 minutes later. Zavala upped the lead to 3-0 at the half with his first of two markers with under 10 minutes to go.

Brandywine put the game away by netting three goals during the first 5:15 of the second period. Cairy notched his hat trick just 34 seconds into the final stanza before Zavala added a score at the 47:14 mark.

Ethan Pace (Stowe, Pa./Pottsgrove) made the count 6-0 when he struck for a goal in the 51st minute.

It was all Brandywine from that point as the Lions poured it on with five more goals during the final 20 minutes. Josh Land (Boerne, Texas./Samuel V. Champion) scored twice, while Alexis Cordova Bernal (Oxford, Pa./Avon Grove), Nick Gaither (Boerne, Texas./Samuel V. Champion) and Kyle Reuter (York, Pa./Dallastown Area) also found the back of the net.

Brandywine scored its 11 goals on 18 shots, while limiting New Kensington to just one shot on goal. John Simpson (Philadelphia, Pa./Franklin Towne Charter) turned away New Kensington's lone attempt to record the shutout in net.
